Visual Arts

ACTS Focus Class:

The ACTS art class is made up of an outstanding group of sixth grade students who are all uniquely talented in the field of art. This year they have created three dimensional, life size King Tut style masks, as well as ceiling tile tessellations, curve stitching, and clay sculpture.

Visual art is an important aspect of ACTS. It is my goal to encourage students to create qualitative art that is an expression of their feelings, knowledge, and experiences. I will do this by incorporating the six visual art standards outlined in the S.C. Visual and Performing Arts Standards. There are many valid reasons for art education. It teaches students to think abstractly, to be tolerant of others, and to problem solve creatively. I think the most important aspect of art education is self expression. While my students are learning about famous artists and the art of diverse cultures, it is important that they create their own art as a means of self expression, not merely copy other artists.

Susan Schlomer, Teacher

I have lived in Greenwood nearly most my life.  I even graduated from Greenwood High School in 1976.  Then, I journeyed to the University of Georgia.  I obtained a degree in Interior Design and Consumer Science.  After graduation, I moved to Laurens.  I taught tap, jazz, ballet, and aerobics at the Laurens YMCA and Greenwood YMCA.

In 1988, I completed my teaching certification in Art, Consumer Science, and Elementary Education from Lander University.  I took a job at the G. Frank Russell Career Center teaching Child Care and Development. I taught there for eight years.

In 1997, I accepted a visual art position at Ware Shoals Primary and Elementary Schools teaching kindergarten through sixth grade.  I left Ware Shoals to come to Greenwood School District 50 in June of 2007.

The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.

Where the spirit does not work with the hands there is no art.
